My first approach to music took place at a very early age and it was completely self-taught. It was mainly a game based on experimentation and surprise. That first amazement turned into real interest later on, when I had the chance to study classical piano at the “Conservatorio Superior de Barcelona”, and subsequently, in a certain way of acting and living: as I discovered Jazz, an intense relationship began, which brought me here step by step.
Since then, I have carried out some projects that allowed me to cover different musical perspectives, such as “Brazilian Sextet”, “Ante Meridiem Duo”, the recording for Telecinco Mediaset of my work “Preludio, poema y soneto” for solo piano, or YO!, a production with the U.S. choreographer Becky Sigel, that merged contemporary dance and jazz improvisation, where I had the pleasure of being in charge of the music and performing it live with my regular trio.
In 2009, the “Festival de Jazz de Donostia” selected my “Mikel Gaztelurrutia Trio” and “Thee New Jazz Voice Ensemble” projects, although it was the latter —published that same year by Errabal jazz— which was finally part of their programme. Now, my new project sees the light of day: “Walk”.
